Portfolios

Runner Up Videos
  • Travis Haughton
  • Photo of stories
  • Bad quality, cannot see all faces, do not like picture of signs
  • Action shots, full body image shots, interesting backgrounds
  • My overall impression of the photographer is that he takes shots of many different things and that keeps his portfolio interesting. However, some of his photos don’t have a clear subject and are not the best of quality. He could have used more rules of composition in photography within his portfolio.

  • Jordan Murph
  • Sports
  • They like his angles, captures the perfect moments, and good graphic composition
  • Do not like colors merging, often no clear subject, bad lighting, posed action
  • I liked the photographers unique angles and composition when taking the action shots. However, sometimes his subject is not clear and the lighting is not set for a certain photo. Also some of his shots are too staged and should be showing more action.

  • Josh Birnbaum
  • Do not like boring and plain photos, weird or unappealing angles, only half faces of subjects, unflattering transitions
  • Like when people get in the middle of the action, like humor within the photos, candid or caught moments
  • I liked how humorous his portfolio was. Most of his photos captured funny emotions on the subject’s faces. However, the angles of his photos were not always flattering and did not appeal to the eye. Also the subject’s were sometimes cut off within the photo.

  • Daryl Peveto
  • Do not like simple or boring photos, images that are very planned out, stories that do not tell a good story
  • They like color balance, detailed shots, humorous photos
  • I liked how his photography was very artsy and had very unique settings. However, some of his stories did not show a clear subject and with this they did not tell a story. Also some of the photos were planned out which were not very appealing.

Winning Portfolio Critique:

  1. The judges like how in his photos you can see all of the subject’s showing emotion or each demonstrating a different action. They like the composition rules the photographer contained within his photos, such as lines of symmetry or repetition.
  2. I liked the patterns and shapes the photographer used in each of his photos, they made the photos very appealing to look at. Also how creative each of his different photos were, there was always an action going on and were all very eye catching. However, a weakness he had was that some of his photos were repetitive with the subjects. He had a lot of swimming and baseball photos that showed the same actions taking place.

Contest Recap Video:

  1. They look at each of the photographers photos as a whole. First they rule out obvious “no”. They then have to look and see what kind of portfolio it is, and they begin critiquing the different portfolios and judging their strengths and weaknesses. Then in the end, they usually have to compare completely different portfolios and choose which one they value more.

Individual Images:

  • I agree with this judges that this is not a good photo. It was way too staged and the composition and lighting is a disaster. There is not purpose to this photo and the subject do not make sense or match up with the background. This photo does not tell a story, and is not appealing to the eye.

  • I disagree with this photo that the judges like because I do not like how you cannot see the subject’s face. Also I do not like how the racket is floating in the air because it makes the photo seem very staged and almost childish. The judges really liked this photo but I think it would be better if you could see the subject’s face and the subject was showing emotion and showing some sort of action.
