Story #2 - Earthquake Story

An earthquake hit the San Francisco Bay area Monday morning. The quake struck the area at 8:12 a.m PDT. The earthquake occurred on the Hayward Fault, which runs under the hills.

The earthquake reportedly had a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale. Building and houses collapsed, injuring and killing residents in the area.

"McHenry's Auto Supply partially collapsed, killing two people and injuring six others." Vu said.

Jennifer Vu, a public information officer, reports the results of this Auto Supply shop collapsing during the quake. The names of the dead are being held due to family privacy.

"I was eating breakfast when the room started rolling. I heard an explosion and a chunk of cement flew through my kitchen window. That's when the screaming started across the street." Beamer said.

Mike Beamer, a Hayward resident, was present during this earthquake. His apartment is across the street from McHenry's. He stated that he felt the rolling motion that lasted for approximately 30 seconds.

"The quake was a "strong one" and it took place on the Hayward Fault, which is under the hills." Gertz said.

Penny Gertz, a scientist from the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, gets feedback on this quake and how strong it really was. This quake was charted to be on the stronger side of the Richter scale.

"Twenty-one fire personnel, 12 police and five American Red Cross workers responded to this building collapse in a matter of four minutes of the quake." Vu said.

Workers responded very quickly in order to begin the search for people who were trapped under the buildings' rubble. 3 of the 6 people injured were seriously hurt, which required hospitalization and were taken to the Hayward General Hospital, according to Vu.

"This earthquake was felt by people as far south as Los Angeles and as far north as Redding." Gertz said.
