Africa

1. I really like how he gets so close to the animals. This gives us a better idea about what the animal is like and his personality. Also I love how dedicated Brandt is to his photos. He has waited 18 days to just stand and watch a lion before taking the perfect shot. All of his photos are very simple, yet they tell a great story. Many of his photos are taken of all of the various animals in Africa and show what kind of environment they are in. Some of these animals are endangered, so Brandt does a great job of capturing the beauty of these animals. And lastly, all of Brandt's photos are in black and white. This gives the photos a more dramatic appeal.

3. This is a photo of a female lion in the dry, empty land of Africa. She has a very strong stance, and a determined look on her face. She looks like the head female of a pack. She does not appear to be weak, and looks like she can take care of her own being. I liked this photo because it is very simple, yet it tells us so much about this female lion. Just by the way she stands and the expression on her face, you can tell so much about her personality. This photo resembles a strong female lion.

4. The rule of photography that is present in this photo is simplicity. Simplicity is focusing on one subject and having a very plain background that does not take away focus from the main subject. The lion is very close and focused on, while the rest of the photo isn't clearly visible. Also this photo can show balance. There is balance between the lion's legs that create triangular shapes.

5. Nick Brandt uses a Pentax 67II with only two fixed lenses. He photographs on medium-format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses. This is important because he believes that actually being close to the animals makes a huge difference in revealing their personality. This allows him to actually be able to capture there spirit.

6. His reason for taking these photos is to capture these animals personality and reveal who they are. He wants to show the simple, yet iconic meaning behind each of these animals. He isn't interested in capturing action or drama. He just wants to document the animals in a simplistic way.

7. By taking these photos, Brandt hopes that these animals will no longer be endangered by human activity. As he captures these animals feelings and personalities, he wants people to realize that animals have just as much a right to live as we do. He hopes to raise awareness for these beautiful creatures. He wants people to see it through his eyes and show that these amazing animals could be vanishing before our eyes.

8. "When people in Africa are poor and starving and there are no crops left to eat due to the deforestation and global warming leading to ever-worsening droughts, they cannot be blamed if they kill the last zebra walking through the bush for their family to eat." - Nick Brandt
