Academic Shoot reflection and critique
1. I faced some challenges when trying to get photos for this shoot. One challenge was trying to incorporate the rules of composition while showing something to do with school. It was hard to get people to show the rules so I had to really try different angles in order to get a decent photo that showed a certain rule. Also getting a clear image was hard because the students were always moving or not staying still.
2. I found myself thinking about the focus of the photo and the lighting needed for that photo. I wanted to make sure that whatever I was taking a photo of that it was in focus and good quality. Also I was trying to take good photos of students showing certain rules of composition. How I took a photo showing a rule is I looked around are tried to think of good rules I could use in that classroom. Then I tried to see how students were sitting or where they were, and position the camera to make them be showing a rule. For example, I saw two groups of kids balancing each other out so I angled my camera in order to make it clear that they were showing balance.
3. If I could do the assignment again I would try to show more rules of composition. When I was shooting I limited myself to only showing the rules I saw. I could have been more creative and challenged myself to try and use my camera in order to show different rules of photography.
4. The things I would do the same is how I took the photos. I think I did a pretty good and consistent job on making sure my photos were in focus and had good lighting.
5. In the next set of prompts I think the easiest rule to shoot will be rule of thirds. Rule of thirds is all about moving and positioning your body in order to capture someone showing this rule. I won't have to struggle finding a certain thing that shows one rule. With the rule of thirds you aren't limited to a subject, you can take any object or subject and apply it to the rule of thirds just by moving your camera.
6. The rule I think is hardest to capture is lines. Lines are tricky because not everything goes in the same direction or path for your eyes to follow. You have to find certain subjects in order to shoot lines. Also leading lines can be really challenging because you have to have a very good angle in order for the picture to look like leading lines. I feel like this rule would take a while to find, especially if the shoot has something to do with people. In my opinion lines seem more common to find on objects rather than people or moving things.
7. I am still not totally clear on mergers. I know that if someone's hand is in it but there body is cropped out then that is a merger so for a photo you would want to crop there hand out. However, I don't exactly know how to avoid mergers when it's talking about objects being the same color or subjects blending in. I think if I practice more on trying to shoot this rule then I will be more comfortable with taking photos for it.
